NATO official admits Ukraine's membership in exchange for Russia's territorial concessions: Foreign Ministry reacts

The head of the NATO Secretary General's Office, Stian Jenssen, said that Ukraine could become a full-fledged NATO member, but that it would have to give up some of its territory in favour of Russia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on his words, noting that such talk is unacceptable.

Jensen said this during a debate in Norway, VG reports. A representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Oleh Nikolenko, responded to his words.

According to Jensen, such an agreement could be a harbinger of the end of a full-scale war.

"I think that the solution may be for Ukraine to give up its territory and become a member of NATO," he said.

At the same time, according to the media, negotiations on Ukraine's status after the conflict is resolved have allegedly already begun. Moreover, it is not only Jenssen who is allegedly raising the issue of giving up some territories.

"It is important that we discuss how to get through this. I am not saying that this is the way it should be. But it could be a possible solution. There have been significant developments in the issue of Ukraine's future membership in NATO," the Alliance representative added.

For his part, Nikolenko noted that the participation of individual NATO representatives in shaping such narratives "plays into Russia's hands."

"Talks about Ukraine joining NATO in exchange for giving up some Ukrainian territories are absolutely unacceptable. We have always assumed that the Alliance, like Ukraine, does not trade territories. The conscious or unconscious involvement of NATO officials in shaping the narrative about the possibility of Ukraine giving up its territories plays into Russia's hands," he stressed.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the ministry is committed to further cooperation with the NATO secretariat to ensure Ukraine's victory and full membership in the Alliance as soon as possible.

On 13 July, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius, the leaders of the G7 countries agreed on a joint declaration in support of Ukraine with guarantees of Ukraine's security. They provide for a number of bilateral security commitments to Kyiv aimed at "building a Ukraine that can defend its territorial integrity now and in the future".
