Ambassador of Ukraine praises Scholz's "diplomatic skills"

Ukraine's Ambassador to Germany Oleksii Makeiev praised German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his actions during the EU summit in Brussels. The politician then urged Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to leave the room during the vote on starting negotiations with Ukraine on its accession to the EU.

Makeiev said this in an interview with the German radio station rbb24 Inforadio, Deutsche Welle reports. It was this step by the German Chancellor that made it possible to start official negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

Such "diplomatic skills" of Scholz prevented Hungary's veto, the diplomat noted. He also expressed gratitude to the German government for its assistance to Ukraine.

"The government is doing the right thing," Makeev said.

The ambassador emphasized that Germans should realize that it is in their interest to help Ukraine during the war as the aggressor country Russia poses a threat to peace in the whole of Europe. Germany should become one of the leaders in supporting our country, he said.

First of all, Ukraine needs more weapons to be able to achieve a turning point in the war against Russia. At the same time, it is important to think about rebuilding our country now.

As reported by OBOZ.UA:

- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban walked out of the room during a meeting of the European Council, which was voting on the start of negotiations with Ukraine on its membership. It was German Chancellor Olaf Scholz who advised Orban to do so.

- Scholz confirmed that it was he who suggested that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban leave the room during the summit. According to the politician, he lured Orban out with coffee.

- Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba emphasized how much the German chancellor had contributed. According to the diplomat, this act of his will go down in modern history.
