Trump's team called Ukraine's borders a subject of negotiations and commented on NATO
The U.S. stated that Ukraine's borders will be "part of the discussion" in negotiations with Russia. At the same time, they called the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity "unlikely."
This statement was made by U.S. Secretary of Defense Hegseth, Sky News reports. He also considers Ukraine's accession to NATO "unlikely."
According to Hegseth, what Ukraine's borders will look like after the hot phase of the Russian-Ukrainian war is over "remains to be seen, and that's part of the discussion." The fact that the "world policeman" instead of bringing the aggressor to justice agrees to revise the borders of an independent and sovereign state in the center of Europe, the Pentagon chief called "bringing realism to the conversation."
"The reality is that the 2014 borders as part of a negotiated settlement are unlikely. The reality of U.S. troops in Ukraine is unlikely, the reality of Ukraine's membership in NATO as part of a negotiated settlement (is) unlikely," Hegseth emphasized.
When journalists asked him whether the de facto permission to keep the Ukrainian territories occupied during the war of aggression would encourage Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to commit new aggressive acts in the future, Hegseth replied by repeating US President Donald Trump's theses about the North Atlantic Alliance: that if NATO increases its investments and capabilities, this will not happen.
The Pentagon chief was also asked whether the United States was going to maintain its troop presence in Europe at the current level, and he replied that the United States was proud of its military presence, but was not committed to staying there indefinitely.
"You cannot assume that America's presence will last forever. America has to deal with many threats, including the Chinese Communists. As of today, we are very proud of our partnership in Europe," Hegseth said.
Earlier, the Pentagon chief said that providing Ukraine with nuclear weapons is not off the table. He said that this option as a hypothetical alternative to Ukraine's membership in NATO is "still on the table." However, only Trump will decide whether this option will become a reality.
