A protest against President Donald Trump's policy of ending the war in Ukraine is taking place in Kyiv near the US Embassy on Wednesday, February 26. The protesters demand security guarantees and the postponement of the signing of the minerals agreement, expressing distrust of the current American leader.
According to an OBOZ.UA correspondent, people came to the rally with posters reading "God Save America," "Reagan would hate this," "Trump promised justice, but now he has sided with the aggressor, Russia," and so on.
Foreign journalists were also present at the scene.
"We are appealing to Americans, appealing to our leadership, and saying that President Donald Trump cannot be trusted," said one of the participants.
According to the protesters, they oppose the signing of an agreement with the United States on mining in Ukraine, demanding that such agreements be postponed until the end of the war and that security guarantees be provided to the Ukrainian state.
The protesters also appealed to the American people, saying they trusted the Americans, but not their president.
"Trump is not the whole of America. We believe in people, but we don't believe in Trump," the protesters say.
They also add that they want "more security, transparency, and stability."
As reported by OBOZ.UA, French Economy Minister Eric Lombard said that the UK, France, Germany, and other European countries are ready to send their troops to Ukraine to guarantee compliance with the ceasefire. At the same time, Europe expects the United States to support European troops after an agreement is reached between Ukraine and Russia.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on February 26 that there would be no halt to hostilities in Ukraine behind the contact line, as "we have a constitution," and Moscow is not considering any options for deploying foreign peacekeepers on Ukrainian territory.
The day before, Trump said at a press conference in Washington that Vladimir Putin was allegedly determined to end the "conflict" and "settle it." According to him, "We need a deal with Russia, otherwise the war will continue." The US president also said that the burden of military aid to Ukraine would "largely" fall on Europe.
The day before, the media reported that Ukraine had preliminarily agreed with the United States on the terms of an agreement on rare earth minerals. Ukraine hopes that it will improve relations with the Trump administration and pave the way for long-term US security commitments. The new version of the document removed the amount of the $500 billion fund.
Trump, commenting on the deal on Tuesday, said that for Ukraine, it was about "the right to keep fighting." He also said that "Ukrainian soldiers are very brave," but without U.S. assistance, "this war would have ended very quickly."
