The only question is which countries they will be: Zelenskyy announces positive decision of EU leaders on deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced a positive decision by EU leaders to deploy peacekeepers to Ukraine. According to him, no official proposal has yet been received and it is not yet known which countries are ready to do so.
Zelenskyy said this at a meeting with the Ukrainian community at the Ukrainian Embassy in Ankara. He added that this is one part of the security guarantees for our country.
The President said that his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron had informed him of plans to convene a series of meetings, following which he would present proposals for Ukraine.
"Of course, we are talking about a part of security guarantees. The part that European leaders can give to Ukraine. First of all, it is finance, and support for our budget. This is money and weapons to support our army. This is a positive or negative decision to deploy a contingent in Ukraine. Their contingent. But we see a positive decision there. The question is which countries are ready for it. And at the end of all these meetings, Emmanuel will tell me how they see it," the head of state said.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, at an emergency summit in Paris, Macron proposed to deploy European peacekeeping forces behind the future demarcation line in Ukraine, rather than directly on it. However, some countries rejected this scenario.
Poland, Germany, Italy, and Spain spoke out against sending their troops to Ukraine.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called such a discussion "extremely inappropriate and completely premature" as the war in Ukraine is still ongoing.
In his turn, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that European countries will not create a unified army in response to threats from Russia. He reiterated that Warsaw has no plans to send its troops to Ukraine. The same opinion was expressed by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, although he promised support to countries that would be able to provide Kyiv with such guarantees.
According to Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp, any potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia should not provide for peacekeepers, but for deterrence forces.
