Security guarantees, territory and reconstruction are being discussed: Macron gives tentative deadline for ceasefire

French President Emmanuel Macron said that a ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and Russia could be reached in the coming weeks. He emphasized that a peace agreement should not mean "surrendering Ukraine" and should be backed by concrete security guarantees for the Ukrainian state.

He said this in an interview with Fox News after talks with US President Donald Trump in Washington. According to Macron, a ceasefire will allow discussing important issues, including security guarantees, territorial disputes, and the reconstruction of the affected regions.

"I think a truce can be reached in the coming weeks. During this period of time, we will negotiate security guarantees, land, territory, ... reconstruction. The US will discuss rare earth minerals," he said.

The French leader added that it is important to involve the United States, Ukraine's allies, and Ukraine itself in the negotiations, as all these parties have a common interest in stability and security in Europe.

Macron said that he had spoken with 30 other European leaders and allies, and many of them were ready to become part of security guarantees for Ukraine.

One of the security options, according to Macron, is to send peacekeeping forces to certain areas that will be determined as part of a peace agreement. However, these troops should not be on the front line.

"Not on the front line, not to engage in confrontation, but to be in some of the places defined by the agreement, whose presence will support this peace and our collective confidence with the support of the United States," the French president said.

Macron also emphasized the importance of an agreement on minerals, in particular rare earth elements, which is currently being discussed by Washington and Kyiv. He believes that such an agreement could be one of the ways to ensure the US commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, on the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, called for an urgent de-escalation and immediate cessation of hostilities. The UN calls for "a just, lasting and comprehensive peace that fully respects the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders."
