Scholz has already spoken to Putin: The media learned the first details
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had his first phone conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in two years. The conversation lasted an hour and was initiated by Scholz.
This was reported by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, and the fact of the conversation was also confirmed by the German government. During the conversation, Scholz called on Putin to withdraw his troops from Ukraine and prepare for peace talks.
According to the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the conversation took place today, November 15, and was preceded by lengthy preparations.
Meanwhile, Tagesschau adds that Scholz's conversation with the Russian dictator lasted about an hour.
The fact of the conversation between Scholz and Putin was officially confirmed by the German government. A statement posted on the government's website said that during the conversation, Scholz called on Putin to withdraw his troops from Ukraine and on Russia to "be ready to negotiate with Ukraine to achieve a just and lasting peace."
In addition, according to the German government's statement, the Federal Chancellor emphasized Germany's determination to support Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression "as long as necessary."
Before this call, Scholz spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the statement said. A conversation between the two politicians is also planned after the contact between Scholz and Putin.
The Kremlin has not yet said anything about the conversation.
Bloomberg also reported that the war in Ukraine, and more specifically, ways to end it, was the main topic of the conversation between Scholz and Putin, citing sources.
Earlier, the German chancellor said that he was ready to contact Putin to end the war in Ukraine. Until now, the last time he spoke with the Russian dictator was on December 2, 2022.
It became known on November 11 that Scholz was going to hold his first talks with Putin after a two-year break. When asked when such a conversation could take place, the chancellor answered briefly, "Soon."
"Yes, I decided to talk to the Russian president at the right time. But I am a responsible politician, I will not do it alone," Scholz said at the time.
He also clarified that he would like to have a number of other conversations before talking to Putin. In particular, he planned to discuss all the details with the Ukrainian side.
