Russia will be a threat for years: Sandu said that joining the EU will help protect Moldova

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that the aggressor country Russia will be a serious threat to Chisinau for many years to come. In her opinion, Moscow will continue to attempt a coup d'etat in Moldova.

Only if the country becomes a member of the European Union will it be protected from the Kremlin's attacks. Sandu said this in an interview with DW published Monday, June 19.

"The current geopolitical situation shows that Russia will remain a great source of instability for years to come, and Russia is a threat to our democracy. Therefore, we believe that our democracy will be safer in the EU," Sandu said.

The President noted that Russian disinformation and propaganda are the most detrimental to Moldovan democracy. Coping with this problem, she said, is not easy even for countries with strong institutions. However, Moldova will learn and cope with Russian propaganda.

According to her, Moldova was able to prevent Russia from staging a coup d'état in the country, but that does not mean that the Kremlin will not make similar attempts in the future.

Sandu also stressed the importance of continuing to support and help Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

"All support must be given (to Ukraine. - Ed.) for the return of its territories. Otherwise we risk ending up in a world where state borders are no longer respected. And this is not a world that anyone would want to live in," the Moldovan president said.

In March 2023, the Dossier Center and a group of international journalists released an investigation stating that the administration of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin had developed a strategy for the political and economic subjugation of Moldova. The plan was created back in 2021 and is designed for 10 years. However, the Kremlin's plans to "absorb" the state have failed.
