"It's only going to get worse": Trump calls on Russia to end the war, threatens new sanctions and tariffs on all Russian exports to the US
US President Donald Trump has called on Russia to end its war against Ukraine and conclude a peace deal. Otherwise, he threatened to impose new sanctions and duties on all Russian exports to the United States.
"I am going to do Russia, whose economy is collapsing, and President Putin a very big favor. Make a deal now and end this senseless war! It's only going to get worse," the 47th US president wrote on Truth Social.
If Russia refuses to sign a peace agreement, Trump threatened tough sanctions:
"If we don't make a deal, soon I will have no choice but to impose high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on everything Russia sells to the United States and other participating countries."
At the same time, the new US president said that he "does not want to harm Russia," "loves the Russian people, and has always had a very good relationship with Putin."
Trump also recalled how "Russia helped us win World War II, losing nearly 60 million lives in the process."
"Let's end this war, which would never have started if I were president! We can do it the easy way or the hard way – and the easy way is always better. It is time to make a deal. Not a single life should be lost!" he summarized.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, on January 22, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Putin's contacts with Trump have not yet been agreed upon. At the same time, they said that they were preparing for negotiations and hoped to hear "something more clear and concrete from Washington."
Earlier it became known that Trump instructed Special Envoy for Russia and Ukraine Keith Kellogg to end the war within 100 days. However, according to The Wall Street Journal, the political establishment in the United States does not believe that the new leader will be able to implement his plans. It will be much harder to make a deal with Putin than Trump promised before the election, the newspaper writes.
