"It will be a very big deal." Trump confirms Zelenskyy's visit to US on Friday
On Wednesday, February 26, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Washington. It will take place this Friday.
The American leader announced during a meeting of his Cabinet of Ministers. Trump noted that "we are pleased with this."
"It will be a very big deal on rare earth metals and other things. Everything has been agreed upon. We are happy with it. We're also going to make a deal with Russia and Ukraine to stop killing people," Trump added.
He also emphasized that he was not going to give too many security guarantees to Ukraine.
"We're going to ask Europe to do that, but we're going to do everything we can to make sure it goes well. We will really cooperate with Ukraine, we really need rare earth elements," the US president said.
Ukraine and the US finalize negotiations on rare earth metals
On February 26, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced the conclusion of negotiations on the agreement during a telethon. At the same time, the media published a possible text of the future agreement.
The document, as reported by Shmyhal, contains references to security guarantees for Ukraine, as well as conditions for long-term peace. "According to the sources, there may be some point changes (in particular, the change of signatories), but the main provisions have already been agreed upon," the media reported.
Based on the published text, Ukraine's legal obligation is to start negotiations with the United States on a more detailed document that will regulate the activities of the Reconstruction Investment Fund. It is to be created by Ukraine and the United States.
On February 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the United States and Ukraine had agreed on a framework agreement on natural resources. However, the document does not contain any provisions on Ukraine's debt – neither $500 billion nor any other amount – nor on the full transfer of Ukrainian resources to US ownership. At the same time, another document will be developed in the future to regulate the activities of the "Recovery Investment Fund."
