"I think Putin wants to settle it": Trump explains how much longer Ukraine war will last
US President Donald Trump said that Russia's war against Ukraine "could end within weeks." In his opinion, the settlement is likely to be quick.
At the same time, the American leader claims that Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin is allegedly determined to end the "conflict."
"I spoke with President Putin. I think he wants to settle it," Trump said at a press conference in Washington.
He emphasized, "We need to have a deal, otherwise it's going to continue."
The US president also acknowledged that the burden of military assistance to Ukraine would be "largely" on Europe.
The journalists asked him to comment on the fact that French President Emmanuel Macron had asked for American support in guaranteeing security. Trump said that "negotiations are ongoing."
"I don’t think that’s [i.e. security guarantees to Ukraine] going to be a problem," Trump said. "I spoke with Russia about it. They didn’t seem to have a problem with it. So I think they understand," the Republican said.
When asked about providing Ukraine with air defense equipment, Trump replied that it should be primarily Europe's responsibility, and reiterated that he had "very good conversations" with both Kyiv and Moscow.
On February 25, the White House said that the agreement between Ukraine and the United States on the development of Ukrainian mineral resources is "critically important."
Reuters reports that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may visit the United States this week (tentatively, February 28) and sign a minerals agreement there.
