Hungary blocks the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU and makes demands – media

Hungary has blocked the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union. In particular, the Hungarian delegation insists on creating an additional plan to protect national minorities.

This was reported by RMF24 with reference to an EU diplomat. Such actions may prevent the opening of the first cluster of negotiations in April.

Poland, which currently heads the EU Council, sent a letter with conditions for the launch of the Fundamentals cluster, which was planned to be handed over to Ukraine. This document emphasized the need to develop two roadmaps that define a plan for reforms in the areas of rule of law and public administration.

Only the Hungarian delegation opposed this letter and demanded that Ukraine also provide a plan for the protection of national minorities. This could delay the opening of the first cluster of negotiations in April, as two more procedural decisions need to be made by then, which could potentially be blocked.

As a reminder, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently accused the EU leadership of "destroying Europe." According to him, the European economy is weakening, and Ukraine is to blame. The EU is investing in a "hopeless war" in Ukraine.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, in early February, the Hungarian prime minister made a provocative statement comparing Ukraine to Afghanistan. Orban believes that without peace talks with Russia, our country risks being in a state of constant conflict.
