"Complete bullshit": the Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to Russia's demands not to take Ukraine to NATO
Russia, which is waging a war of aggression on the territory of a neighboring state, cannot issue ultimatums to the North Atlantic Alliance. The aggressor country has no right to demand that NATO cancel the promise made at the 2008 Bucharest summit about Ukraine's future membership.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine responded sharply to Russia's demands. A statement was published by Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi on the social network X.
Before that, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said that Ukraine's potential membership in NATO allegedly "makes it impossible to achieve peace in Ukraine and, in a broader sense, to create at least some kind of security architecture." He called the decision of the Bucharest NATO summit, which enshrined the Alliance's plans to admit Georgia and Ukraine to its membership, "catastrophic for European security."
"Failure to withdraw this wording will create ambiguity, which is unacceptable to us," Grushko said.
In response to Russia's cynical ultimatum, the Foreign Ministry said that it was not up to Moscow to decide whom NATO should accept into its alliance.
The spokesman for the Ukrainian ministry formulated the statement in the vocabulary that Russia understands best.
"Oh, dear, North Korea's ally is issuing ultimatums to NATO. It's complete bullshit. Moscow has not been given a word on this issue," Tykhyi said.
The spokesperson added that it is Russia that is waging a war of aggression on the territory of Europe and that its terrorists are currently in Ukraine and other European countries.
"The European security architecture is built on protection against Russia," the Foreign Ministry emphasized.
