Slovak President criticizes Fico for contacts with Russia

Slovak President Zuzana Chaputova criticized Prime Minister Robert Fico for his contacts with the terrorist country Russia. The head of state also emphasized that the prime minister is trying to weaken the rule of law.

In addition, Chaputova compared Fico to another "friend" of Russia, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. She said this in an interview with the Financial Times.

According to her, the Slovak prime minister is testing the limits of democracy with his judicial reform and attacks on the Constitutional Court. Chaputova also emphasized that Fico draws inspiration from his Hungarian counterpart Orban.

"Slovakia is often compared to Hungary today. It seems obvious that Fico's government draws some inspiration from Hungary," Chaputova said.

It is worth noting that Chaputova's criticism of Fico is related to changes to the Criminal Code and the liquidation of the special prosecutor's office that investigates serious crimes and corruption. The president even had to appeal to the Constitutional Court to suspend some of the changes in legislation.

In turn, Fico said that the next president of Slovakia should dismiss one of the judges of the Constitutional Court for being responsible for leaking information to the media. In response, Chaputova called such intimidation "completely unacceptable and irresponsible."

As a reminder, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in his speech on the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine once again repeated the Kremlin's narrative. He said that Russia's war against Ukraine in 2014 began with "rampant Ukrainian neo-Nazis."

Earlier it was reported that former US President Donald Trump received Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at his residence in Florida. During the meeting, Trump called Orban a "boss" and a "fantastic leader," while mocking criticism of his illiberal tendencies.
