Bundestag failed to vote for additional €3 billion for Ukraine: what is the reason
The Bundestag failed to vote on additional funding for military aid to Ukraine. Members of the German parliament could not reach a consensus, so the meeting was adjourned.
Shortly before midnight, the Free Democratic Party submitted a proposal to fund aid to Ukraine, but by then the parliament no longer had a quorum. This was reported by the German newspaper Zeit.
After a lively debate at around 00:30, the Bundestag meeting was closed earlier than scheduled. The next discussion on financing military aid to Ukraine was canceled and rescheduled for another date.
The proposal to allocate an additional 3 billion euros was put forward by the Free Democratic Party. Representatives of the political force demanded immediate parliamentary consideration of an unscheduled aid package to Ukraine to finance urgently needed air defense systems to repel Russian attacks.
However, the decision was technically impossible, as only 320 members of parliament took part in the vote, while at least 367 votes are required for a quorum in the Bundestag.
It is worth noting that another debate on military aid to Ukraine is scheduled for the Bundestag in the coming days. This time, it was initiated by the Left, which opposes any arms supplies to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
As a reminder, the US Armed Forces transferred Patriot air defense interceptor missiles from warehouses in Israel to Poland to be delivered to Ukraine. In total, about 90 such missiles were transferred.
Earlier it was reported that France intends to supply Ukraine with fourth-generation Mirage 2000-5F multi-role fighters by the end of the first quarter of 2025. Ukrainian pilots and mechanics completed flight training on these aircraft at the end of last year.
