British Prime Minister Starmer will visit Ukraine to discuss post-war peacekeeping – Bloomberg
In the coming weeks, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will pay his first visit to Ukraine since taking office. One of the goals of the trip will be to discuss the possibility of deploying peacekeepers on Ukrainian territory after the war ends.
Bloomberg reports, citing a source, that the British prime minister plans to visit Kyiv "as Europe ramps up preparations" for Donald Trump's return to the White House in the United States. Starmer's office declined to comment.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Kier Starmer's visit the day before following the 25th meeting in the Ramstein format, without specifying a date.
He recalled that the idea was proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron and that "the British are positive about it."
Before that, on Thursday, Macron and Starmer met for dinner at the British Prime Minister's country residence in Chequers.
Both politicians "reaffirmed their unwavering support" for Ukraine and discussed the importance of ensuring that Ukraine is in the "strongest possible position" in 2025, Starmer's office said.
According to a Bloomberg source, Starmer and Macron also discussed the possibility of creating a joint peacekeeping force in Ukraine.
Such a proposal will depend on a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, which Vladimir Putin has not yet shown willingness to discuss, the article says.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the day before, Zelenskyy said that sending a peacekeeping contingent to Ukraine could be part of security guarantees to prevent Russia from repeating full-scale aggression in the future. According to the president, the UK has a positive attitude toward its participation in such a mission.
