America is no longer interested in guaranteeing Ukrainian and European security – The Telegraph
The administration of the new US president is not interested in guaranteeing either Ukrainian or European security. Thus, modern borders and the overall form of peace in Europe will depend on Europe itself.
This is stated in the review of the oldest British newspaper The Telegraph. The publication refers to the latest speeches by American President Donald Trump and his Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
According to Donald Trump, he had a "very productive" conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, and the latter agreed that the US and Russian teams should "immediately begin negotiations." Thus, the Americans broke their promise not to say "anything about Ukraine without Ukraine."
"If this happened, it is a great victory for Putin's worldview, in which only those countries that decide the fate of others can be truly sovereign," the newspaper writes.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, Pete Hegseth has already "outlined the US president's vision of peace" during a meeting with NATO defense ministers. According to him, Ukraine should not count on the return of the occupied territories (meaning the freezing of the conflict along the current line of contact), NATO membership, and security guarantees that could be provided by NATO militaries.
"This (would be) a grim deal that would reward Russia for its aggression with stolen land and leave Ukraine vulnerable to a second attack in the coming years," the publication notes.
The Telegraph believes that even with such a peace if Ukraine "holds on to Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Kherson and Dnipro" and, above all, if it remains free, "it can be said that the Ukrainian people have won." But victory will only be possible if Kyiv receives reliable security guarantees.
But the problem is that the United States will not provide such guarantees.
"As Trump made clear, and Hegseth put it in language that even a child can understand, America is not interested in guaranteeing either Ukrainian or European security," the publication states.
Thus, the existing "form of peace will depend on Europe itself," according to The Telegraph.
"And now European leaders have to decide whether they want to choose the fate of their continent or let Moscow and Washington do it for them. The first option means large-scale investments in Europe's armed forces and defense industry to deter another Russian attack on Ukraine and even on NATO's European territory," the newspaper noted.
And this is quite possible, the newspaper believes.
"Ukraine already has the largest and most capable army in Europe. And thanks to the Armed Forces, if the UK and other allies keep their word, it is possible to create a reliable defense of the entire continent from the Black Sea to the Barents Sea and from Kharkiv to Kerry County," the newspaper writes.
Because there is only one alternative. Putin will return to Ukraine in a few years, and first, he will take Kharkiv and Kyiv. And then he will invade a NATO country because the Alliance no longer lives up to its rhetoric of collective defense. And Europe will have to live in what Russian diplomats like to call a new European security architecture.
"That is, the whole of Europe will become a place where Putin's position that the strong can and should attack the weak will prevail," The Telegraph suggested.
But "the war is not over yet," and Ukrainian leader "Zelenskyy is a capable and motivated statesman" who "will use every opportunity to get the best deal for Ukraine," the newspaper said.
