Halloween can be a great reason for a vacation. This unforgettable mystical atmosphere will give you a truly incredible experience. Some European cities are preparing for the holiday especially carefully. Riviera Travel experts have even created the Spooky Travel Index rating, which classifies cities by their ability to organize an unforgettable Halloween weekend.

To do this, they analyzed such factors as the number of walking tours with ghosts, the presence of cemeteries and urban legends, as well as the average length of daylight hours in each destination. The Express told us where to spend Halloween.

Top 10 best cities to spend Halloween

The study found that Rome is the best city for Halloween. With 36 haunted tours and 24 cemeteries, it's easy to see why the Italian capital is considered one of the best places for a spooky trip. Tours include walks through the city's ancient crypts and catacombs. According to TripAdvisor, the best rated tour is The Original Roman Crypts and Catacombs Tour. It lasts three and a half hours, where travelers learn everything about the history of the city.

Prague took the second place with a score of 50 points out of 60. The city is ranked high due to the variety of ghost tours offered, 34 in total. The Czech capital is home to some incredibly creepy buildings, including the Sedlec Ossuary, a church that houses more than 40,000 human bones.

Paris comes in third with 49 points out of 60 and offers a range of spooky activities, including visits to the Père Lachaise Cemetery and the Parisian Catacombs. The City of Love has 25 haunted tours and 13 cemeteries.

Bucharest is another great option for Halloween. The capital of Romania offers visitors 77 exciting ghost tours. Meanwhile, the city is close to Transylvania, the birthplace of Count Dracula.

Berlin is fifth on the list. Although the city has only three ghost tours to offer, the historical significance of the German capital sets the tone for an eerie and disturbing journey. Many places are reportedly haunted, including the Spandau Citadel, a medieval fortress.

Another great choice for travelers was the Austrian capital Vienna, which scored 43 points. Seven ghost tours are available, including a walk through the city's underground catacombs.

Budapest also scored 43 points and offers travelers 12 tours to medieval haunted places. One of the most popular tours is the night-time dark history tour, which provides an incredible insight into urban myths and legends.

The second Italian city in this ranking is Venice, which scored 39 points. There are 22 ghost tours, including walking tours at night. Near Venice is the island of Poveglia, which is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of plague victims.

The capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam, also scored 39 points. The city, known for its narrow canals, has six ghost tours, allowing visitors to enjoy the spooky culture of Haarlem and Ultrecht. The average length of daylight hours during October is 10.6 hours, making the nights longer and spookier.

Finally, the Norwegian capital Oslo scored 37 points. There is only a single haunted tour dedicated to the most popular myths and legends of Oslo. In addition, three cemeteries and an average of 10.1 hours of daylight help to create a backdrop for Halloween. The city is home to Akershus Fortress, which is home to a black devil dog that is said to bring bad luck.

Will Sarson, travel expert at Riviera Travel, noted that these tours allow travelers to enjoy local culture, learn about historical stories and feel the spirit of Halloween.
