What can be taken from the hotel room

Bringing back souvenirs from a trip is a tradition. However, did you know that some things can be taken with you from a hotel legally? We'll tell you what the rules are below.

Don't worry, you are allowed to take disposable items from your accommodation:

  • body balm and lotion, usually provided in small bottles
  • cotton pads and sticks
  • tea, coffee, cream, which are always available in the room
  • notepads, pens, pencils with the hotel logo
  • slippers
  • mini bar products (if you paid for it in advance)

By the way, most hoteliers around the world adhere to the "S Rule". According to it, tourists can take items starting with the letter S.

  • soap
  • shampoo
  • shower gel
  • shower cap
  • slippers
  • stationery
  • sewing kit
  • shoe shine sits (a set for cleaning/polishing boots)
  • sugar

Convenient, isn't it? However, some things are better left in the room to avoid unnecessary problems.

  • Towels, pillows, blankets, bed linen, curtains and carpets belong to the hotel. Bathrobes are also forbidden to take away, but some luxury complexes give them as a souvenir. This point should be clarified with the staff.
  • It is better to leave cups, glasses, vases, ashtrays, paintings, mirrors, hangers, and potted plants in the room.
  • Light bulbs, kettles, coffee makers, fans, irons, hair dryers, clocks, cable boxes, and TV remotes are also best left untouched.

By the way, many American lodging places keep a Bible in their rooms. And, of course, it should remain in place.

Don't hesitate to ask the hotel staff if you can take a particular item. This will help avoid awkward situations and accusations of theft. However, what happens if you are caught red-handed?

  1. They will ask you to return everything back.
  2. They will offer to buy the same item at the front desk.
  3. If they notice that the item has disappeared after checking out, they will charge the card used to pay for the stay. This is stated in the rules, which you should read in advance.
  4. They will put you on the blacklist of violators.
  5. They will call the police, after which they will most likely issue a fine.

An interesting case: two Australians stole a bicycle from a hotel on the island of Gili. After that, they were publicly humiliated by being marched down the main street with shameful signs around their necks. We think that after this incident, other tourists definitely lost the desire to take anything with them.

By following these simple rules, you can not only enjoy your stay at the hotel but also keep pleasant memories and avoid problems.
