Holidays in Sardinia

Sardinia is an ideal island for those who want to enjoy the unique nature and combine a beach vacation with educational excursions. It attracts tourists from all over the world with its picturesque landscapes, unique beaches, ancient cities, and cultural attractions.

If you haven't decided on your next travel destination yet, Sardinia may be a great option. LonelyPlanet has told us about the unique places worth seeing on the island.

Golfo di Orosei

Golfo di Orosei is a large bay on the east coast of Sardinia, known for its crystal clear water, beautiful beaches and rocky shores. The meeting of land and sea here is so sharp that the best beaches of the bay, such as Camontla Mariola, can only be reached by boat or on foot. The easiest way to explore this stretch of coastline is to take a boat tour from the Cala Gonone resort.

Golfo di Orosei can be reached by car or bus from other cities in Sardinia. The nearest airport is in Olbia.

Su Nuraxi di Barumini

This complex is one of the most significant examples of the Nuragic civilization that flourished in Sardinia during the Bronze Age. In 1997, the Su Nuraxi di Barumini was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Su Nuraxi consists of a central tower surrounded by a bastion with four corner towers, as well as the settlement that existed around the nuraghi. Nurags are unique megalithic structures that were common in Sardinia during the Bronze Age. Their purpose is not fully understood, but it is believed that they could have served as defensive structures as well as centers of social and political life. The construction of the central tower of Su Nuraksi began in the fifteenth century BC. In the XIII-VI centuries BC, a settlement arose around the nurag, which later became a large city.

Alghero

Alghero has a rich history that is reflected in its architecture. Here you will find medieval fortifications, narrow streets, ancient churches and palaces. The historic center of the city is especially worth a visit, where you can find St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Francis Church and other interesting sights.

To fully experience the tranquil atmosphere of Alghero, take an early evening stroll along the walls framed by three picturesque towers. Alghero is famous for its beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear water. The Lido di San Giovanni beach is located right in the city, and a few kilometers away are the beaches of Maria Pia, Lazzaretto and others.

Archipelago of della Maddalena

The Archipelago della Maddalena is located in the northeastern part of Sardinia. It consists of seven large islands: La Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria, and Razzoli, as well as many small islands.

The Archipelago della Maddalena is part of a national park that was created in 1994 to protect the unique nature of this region. Here you can practice various water sports such as diving, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. There are also many hiking trails on the islands that pass through picturesque places.

For a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere, take a stroll along the pedestrianized Via XX Settembre in the historic center of La Maddalena and stop for an aperitif during your evening stroll. 7 km east across the causeway to Compendio Garibaldino, you can get to the estate of Italian national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Barbaja

The rocky mountainous area south of Nuoro was the last outpost of Sardinia conquered by the Romans, which earned it the name Barbaja (similar to "barbarian"). Ancient traditions are still preserved in the region's festivals, especially the Festa di Sant'Antonio Abate.

Barbagia is characterized by hilly terrain with dense forests, rocky gorges and fast rivers. The highest point of the region is Mount Jennargent (1834 meters above sea level). The culture of Barbados is unique and distinctive. Ancient customs, rituals and traditions are still preserved here. Barbadians are known for their musical folklore, dances, and crafts. Especially popular are traditional Barbadian costumes, which are distinguished by their brightness and originality.
