SUVs are generally considered to be among the most depreciable vehicles. They are popular among buyers for their comfort, roominess, and durability.

However, not all models retain their value equally well. Some SUVs lose a significant portion of their price in as little as three years of ownership. What Car found out which models are on this list and what they offer to buyers.

Depreciation of hybrids and electric cars

One of the leaders in terms of depreciation was the Jeep Compass. Its hybrid system provides only a slight improvement in fuel economy. Despite its sturdy construction and spacious interior, the Compass is inferior to its competitors in terms of handling and comfort, and the harsh engine sound does not add to its appeal.

The DS 7 also loses a significant portion of its value – about $50,000 over three years. Its plug-in hybrid system has sufficient power and allows you to drive 48 km without fuel. However, the high price and questionable quality of materials limit its popularity.

Electric SUVs: a bargain or a risk

Although the Jaguar I-Pace is rapidly depreciating, it can be a bargain on the secondary market. This electric car has excellent dynamic characteristics and a range of up to 415 km, although in real life it rarely reaches the stated figures.

The MG ZS EV is a small electric SUV with attractive potential, offering up to 279 miles on a single charge. However, its comfort at highway speeds leaves much to be desired, especially when compared to its competitors.

Mazda and Peugeot

The Mazda MX-30 disappoints with a limited range of 200 km, which is significantly less than its competitors. Although it offers a comfortable ride and a nice interior, the rear hinged doors reduce its practicality.

Peugeot e-2008 attracts with its maneuverability and instant acceleration. Despite this, the model loses a significant part of its value, which can be beneficial for used car buyers.

Luxury SUVs and depreciation

Even among luxury models, depreciation is a serious problem. The Maserati Levante, for example, loses a significant portion of its price despite offering powerful gasoline engines. Its hybrid version, unfortunately, is not a real alternative to eco-friendly SUVs.

SUV depreciation depends on many factors: technology, build quality, design, and market popularity. In particular, electric and hybrid models often lose more value than traditional gasoline or diesel cars. Choosing an SUV requires a careful analysis of not only the technical characteristics but also the dynamics of value loss.
