For artists, the capital of Ukraine has always been a focal point for creating their masterpieces. Taras Shevchenko was among the artists who painted Kyiv.

Kyrylo Stepanets, a Kyiv guide, posted old photos on his Telegram channel. You can see what the capital was like about 180 years ago.

"Kyiv in the paintings of Taras Shevchenko," Stepanets wrote.

In the pictures published by the guide, you can see St. Michael's Cathedral, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, and whatAskold's Grave used to look like.

Taras Shevchenko was a Ukrainian poet, prose writer, thinker, painter, engraver, ethnographer, and public figure. He wa s a national hero and a symbol of Ukraine. He was also an activist of the Ukrainian national movement, a member of the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius, and an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1860).

Shevchenko's literary heritage, in particular his collection Kobzar, is considered the foundation of modern Ukrainian literature and, to a large extent, the Ukrainian literary language.
