Viewers of "Rust" were struck by a shooting scene very similar to the murder of Halyna Hutchins: review

The Polish Camerimage festival premiered the western "Rust," during the filming of which actor Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed Ukrainian cameraman Halyna Hutchins. According to critics, the film contains a gruesome scene reminiscent of the death of a Ukrainian woman who died in 2021.

"The second [trigger pull] leads to the accidental death of a character, causing a breathlessness in the premiere attendees," Vulture's review says. The expert added that it is difficult to separate the events of "Rust" from a real deadly disaster while watching it. "Rust" doesn't recreate the tragedy, but it permeates the film, which is compelling, an appropriately unvarnished western about guilt, blame, family, law, and loyalty," the critic writes.

There have been many questions about why they decided to continue filming the movie after Hutchins' death unless it was to recoup the money already spent on it. Production on the film in New Mexico was halted in 2021, after which prosecutors filed charges against Baldwin. The involuntary manslaughter case against him was dismissed by a New Mexico judge in July, and the film's gunman, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, is currently serving 18 months in prison. Production resumed in 2023.

A reviewer for Vulture said Baldwin, who plays an 1880s Kansas outlaw named Garland Rust, is a stunner on screen. "Baldwin is often off-balance," the commentary reads, "His accent and overall mood of the performance fluctuate from scene to scene.

A critic at the Polish premiere said that Rust was a "solid western." "I thought it looked great with really amazing cinematography," he added.
