Ukrainian tennis player Lyudmyla Kichenok has become a semifinalist at the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Australian Open 2024. The 31-year-old tennis player from Dnipro achieved this success together with Jeļena Ostapenko from Latvia in the women's doubles.

In the fourth round, the girls, who are seeded No. 11 at the Melbourne Super Tournament, defeated the French pair Caroline Garcia/Christina Mladenovic in 1 hour and 45 minutes. It took Jeļena and Lyudmyla two games to do so - 7:6, 6:4.

During this time, the Latvian-Ukrainian duo served out six times, won 22 active games and converted three of nine breakpoints. Ostapenko and Kichenok each had three double faults and unforced errors.

In the battle for a ticket to the final of the Australian Open-2024, the tennis players will compete with fourth seeds Erin Routliffe (New Zealand) and Gabriela Dobrowski (Canada). It is worth noting that Kichenok recently won a tournament in Brisbane, Australia, together with Ostapenko.

For both the Ukrainian and Latvian players, this semifinal appearance was the first in the history of Grand Slam tournaments in doubles. Both tennis players had previously reached this far only in the mix at Wimbledon.

It should be noted that in the women's singles, Marta Kostiuk lost the quarterfinals of the Australian Open-2024 to Coco Hauff of the United States 6-7, 7-6, 2-6.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, the day before, Ukraine's top-ranked player Elina Svitolina was forced to withdraw from the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in tears. But another Ukrainian tennis player, Dayana Yastremska, beat the world's top-ranked player from Belarus and sensationally overcame the fourth round of the competition.
