For the first time in history, Ukraine will be represented by two tennis players in the 1/8 finals of the Australian Open. Earlier in the day, Marta Kostiuk defeated Elina Avanesyan in the third round of the Australian Open, which takes place in Melbourne from January 14-28, and Diana Yastremska beat Emma Navarro.

In addition, 21-year-old Marta Kostiuk became the youngest Ukrainian to reach the fourth round of the AO.

Ukrainian women have already managed to show similar results at other Grand Slam tournaments:

  • Wimbledon 2019: Svitolina, Yastremska
  • Roland Garros-2023: Svitolina, Tsurenko
  • Wimbledon-2023: Svitolina, Tsurenko

We would like to remind you that on January 20, Elina Svitolina can reach the 1/8 finals of the Australian Open. The Ukrainian top seed plays against Swiss Victoria Golubic.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, on January 19, Kostiuk refused to shake hands with Russian Elina Avanesian after the third round match of the Australian Open-2024.

In addition, it became known that Kostiuk withdrew from the Australian Open doubles draw. The 21-year-old from Kyiv was supposed to play in the second round of the Australian Open together with Polish representative Katarzyna Kawa.
