Top 7 dishes around the world that disappoint a lot of tourists. Photo
A special pleasure while traveling is getting to know the local cuisine. However, tasting national dishes can result in both pleasure and complete disappointment.
Some foreign delicacies can even be dangerous for an unprepared body due to the specifics of cooking. To prevent you from getting poisoned and regretting the money you spent, OBOZREVATEL has prepared a selection of foreign disappointments for tourists.
1. Turkey - kokoreç
Kokoreç is a traditional Turkish dish made from the intestines of sheep or goats. It can be bought both on the street in stalls and in expensive Turkish restaurants.
Turks simply adore this dish, but it makes tourists sick. The fact is that the intestines pass all the waste products of the animal. If the intestines are not washed thoroughly enough, pathogenic bacteria will remain.
2. Great Britain - black pudding and haggis
Pudding is usually associated with something like porridge or dessert. That's why tourists get confused and order black pudding in the UK. However, this traditional national dish is not a dessert at all, but a delicacy made from beef blood, lard, oatmeal and breadcrumbs.
Scotland's national dish, haggis, also regularly disappoints tourists when they find out its composition. It's better to know in advance that haggis is a lamb's stomach stuffed with offal from the same lamb.
3. Greece - moussaka
Think twice before ordering moussaka in Greek taverns. This dish is very difficult to prepare and takes a lot of time.
Therefore, restaurants skip some stages of frying or reheat a frozen dish.
4. Italy - gelato ice cream
Gelato is a hallmark of Italy. It is made from fresh milk, cream and sugar and garnished with seasonal fruits.
Visitors to the country mostly buy ice cream at stalls in popular tourist destinations. It can't be compared to today's ice cream, as unscrupulous sellers offer you gelato made from powder with the addition of dyes.
5. Mexico - salsa and ceviche
Experienced travelers are advised to avoid eating salsa in Mexico. This vegetable dish is safe, but it spoils very quickly due to the heat and becomes an ideal place for bacteria to grow.
And ceviche, a dish made from raw fish, has been repeatedly found to contain various pathogens. It is believed that this food was the cause of the cholera outbreak in Latin America in the 1990s.
6. Japan - fugu fish and miso ice cream
In Japan, tourists encounter many unusual dishes, and most of them are worth trying. Of course, except for fugu fish, which can be fatal if not prepared properly.
Almost all tourists in Japan want to try miso ice cream. There is nothing extreme about it, but you should know that miso is a fish soup with vegetables. It is unlikely that you will be able to finish the ice cream with a fish flavor, so you will definitely regret the money you spent.
7. Thailand - tom yam soup
Thai food is famous all over the world. However, like other national cuisines of the world, it is not to everyone's liking. One of the most famous Thai dishes is a coconut milk soup called tom yam. In Ukrainian restaurants, it is not prepared according to the original recipe - it is adapted to our tastes.
In Thailand, however, it is made spicy, with the characteristic sourness of lime, the aroma of coconut milk and a combination of the most unexpected ingredients: fish sauce, mushrooms and tomatoes.
