It may be hard to hear but fall is almost here. That means it's time not only to buy notebooks for children's school, but also to prepare your car for the rainy season.

MotorOctane has compiled a checklist of everything you should inspect in advance. This way you can improve the safety and reliability of your car in the fall.

Tires

Proper tire maintenance is crucial for safe driving in rainy weather. Check your tires regularly and make sure they are inflated to the recommended level. Well-inflated tires improve traction even on wet roads and reduce the risk of aquaplaning. Also, check the tread depth. Worn tires are less effective on wet roads and increase the risk of skidding. If the tread depth is insufficient, consider replacing the tires.

Windshield wipers

Effective windshield wipers are critical to maintaining good visibility in heavy rain. Check the condition of the wiper blades for signs of damage or wear. If the blades leave streaks on the glass or leak water, it's time to replace them. Also, check the level of windshield washer fluid and fill it up if necessary. You may want to replace your usual washer fluid with a water-repellent product.

Headlights

Good headlights are important not only for your personal safety, but also for the safety of other drivers on the road. Thoroughly inspect all lights, including headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. Replace any bulbs that are burned out or dimmed. Clean the headlight diffusers to maximize their efficiency. Dirt and dust can reduce brightness.

Brakes

Braking distances are longer on wet roads. Therefore, it is important to take care of the condition of your brakes before the rainy season. Have a mechanic inspect the brake pads and rotors to make sure they are in good working order. Squeaks or grinds, reduced sensitivity, or a soft brake pedal may indicate problems that require immediate attention. Fixing any brake problems in a timely manner will help prevent accidents on slippery roads.

Battery

Rainy weather can put extra strain on your car's battery. Check to see if it is sufficiently charged and in good condition. Clean off any corrosion around the battery terminals and make sure they are securely connected. If the battery is old or weak, consider replacing it to avoid unexpected breakdowns in bad weather.

Fluids

Check all important fluids in your vehicle, especially engine oil, coolant, and brake fluid. Rainy weather can increase engine heat and put more strain on the cooling system. That's why you need to keep all the fluids at the appropriate level - fill them up or replace them completely if necessary.

Emergency kit

Preparing an emergency kit is a good practice for any season, but it becomes especially important during the rainy one. Include items such as a flashlight, spare batteries, a first aid kit, raincoat, reflective vest, portable phone charger, and some non-perishable snacks. Also, check the condition of the spare tire and make sure you have all the tools you need to replace it.
