The monument to the Magdeburg Law in Kyiv was erected on the slopes of the picturesque hills in the early 19th century. In the 1880s, an unknown amateur photographer took a picture of the column and a part of Volodymyrskyi Uzviz from the side of Trukhaniv Island.

The old photo was published in the community "Club of the Native Kyivan" on the social network Facebook. The monument is traditionally considered the oldest existing monument in the capital.

"1880s. A view of the monument to the Magdeburg Law. The perfect slope of Volodymyrskyy Descent attracts attention," the post reads.

In the published photo, taken from Trukhaniv Island, you can see not only the column itself but also the picturesque slopes of the right bank.

The Monument to Magdeburg Law in Kyiv (Magdeburg Law Column, also the Monument to the Baptism of Rus; lower monument to St. Volodymyr) is a monument in honor of the return of Magdeburg Law to Kyiv, located in the historic Khreshchatyk tract.

As a reminder, there are many ways to look into the history of Kyiv and see its beauty. In particular, through the paintings of Ukrainian artist Oleksandr Khvostenko-Khvostov, in which he preserved views of the city in the 1950s.

The capital's Lybid River is mentioned in the chronicles of Kyivan Rus in 968. In the 1950s, its channel was not yet hidden by concrete slabs, and a road bridge was built in Vydubychi to allow cars to cross it.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Darnytsia railway station in Kyiv was built in the late 19th century, which turned the area into a famous vacation spot and summer cottage. The building itself looked like a fairy-tale house thanks to its interior and the surrounding forest.
