"The situation is only getting worse": Energy Minister says how long it will take to restore ZNPP after de-occupation

After the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar returns to Ukrainian control, a lot of work will have to be done. It will take years to restart all six power units.

At present, ZNPP is in such a state that it will be technically difficult to restart even one power unit. This was announced on Monday, June 17, during an online meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy, Housing and Utilities, said Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko.

"It is very difficult to estimate how long it will take to put the plant into operation and operate six units. But, according to today's estimates, it is not months. Unfortunately, it is years," he said.

According to the official, in the third year of the Russian occupation, the situation at ZNPP is only getting worse. First of all, this concerns the degradation of equipment.

"The second problem is that due to the undermining of the Kakhovka dam, there is a question of how we will provide water to the plant if we theoretically launch it. The third is that the fuel has reached the end of its service life," the minister added.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, ZNPP should be under full sovereign control of Ukraine - this is the key thesis of the joint communiqué on the foundations of peace approved at the Summit in Switzerland. It also states that the plant must operate safely and securely.
