The sea is for swimming only: popular Spanish resort will fine tourists for urinating
Every year, the number of tourists who want to relax on the picturesque coasts of Spain is growing. As a result, one of the country's most popular resorts, the Costa del Sol, is introducing a new rule for vacationers: paying a fine of 750 euros for urinating in the sea.
This rule of behavior on the country's beaches was first introduced in the small town of Vigo two years ago, Euronews reports. The penalty for satisfying physiological needs in the sea will have to be paid on 25 tourist coasts. So far, there are no official explanations as to how beach workers will identify violators.
The Costa del Sol authorities have noted that fines will also be imposed for urinating on land in places not designated for this purpose.
Local deputies argue that the innovation is due to the fact that such behavior harms its ecosystem. They said that despite the fact that urine is 95 percent water, it contains enough nitrogen, bacteria, and drug residues to contribute to the destruction of underwater biodiversity.
However, scientists from the American Chemical Society have refuted the assumptions, "Our mission is to let you know that it's perfectly safe to swim in the ocean because the amount of nitrogenous substance in our urine is insignificant compared to its volume."
Additionally, the Costa del Sol authorities announced several new bans that will be introduced for vacationers, including playing with rubber balls in the water, reserving a place with an umbrella in advance and resting with animals on public beaches.
