The person with the highest IQ in the world in 2024 has been named. It is Terence Tao, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, and advisor to US President Joe Biden.

According to the results of the intellectual test, the "Mozart of Mathematics", as Tao is called, scored 230 points. This is one of the highest scores in history, Science Focus writes.

It is known that Terence Tao began studying calculus at the university level at the age of 9, and at the age of 16, he started writing his doctoral dissertation at Princeton. He became a professor at the University of California at the age of 24.

To date, Tao, 49, has published 17 books and more than 300 scientific papers. Since 2021, he has been an adviser to US President Joe Biden on science and technology.

The previous record holder was American writer and journalist Marilyn Vos Savant. She is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the person with the highest intelligence quotient (IQ) in the world: 228 points on the Stanford-Binet scale.

IQ scores above 200 are considered extremely rare and difficult to achieve. However, experts emphasize that the results of intelligence tests are often misinterpreted.

A study published in the journal Frontiers In Systems Neuroscience argues that IQ is not a unit of intelligence. That is, a person with an IQ of 130 is not 30% smarter than a person with an IQ of 100. In addition, there have been changes in intelligence testing over the decades.

As a reminder, the intelligence quotient (IQ) is used to measure a person's intelligence level. Scores are calculated by participants taking standardized tests that measure puzzle-solving abilities. Based on the average score, which is usually around 100, the IQ score is correlated with the general intelligence of the population. Below 85 points is considered low, 130 and above – high (in 2% of the population).
