Estonia is recognized as the European capital with the cleanest air and lowest carbon dioxide emissions. According to The Air We Breathe report by World Population Review, Estonia has become the best city from an environmental point of view.

Therefore, if you want to walk through a cozy and atmospheric medieval city without crowds of tourists, you should choose Tallinn. The details were provided by the Express.

The Environmental Performance Index considers factors such as greenhouse gas emissions, CO2, methane, implementation of environmental policies and reforestation, and the use of renewable energy sources.

The analysis showed that Estonia has the cleanest air and the highest global EPI of 75.3.

Other European countries on the list include Luxembourg (75), Germany (74.6), Finland (73.7), the United Kingdom (72.7), Sweden (70.5), Norway (70), Austria (69), Switzerland (68), and Denmark (67.9).

Tallinn is known for its well-preserved medieval Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Winding cobblestone streets, old buildings, and majestic churches create an atmosphere that transports you back in time.

The Old Town actually consists of two separate parts: The Upper Town, or Toompea, where the Estonian government is located, sitting in the beautiful medieval pink Stenbok House and the 800-year-old Toompea Castle, and the Lower Town.

Toompea Castle is one of the oldest and largest architectural complexes in Estonia, located in the southwestern part of the hill of the same name in the center of Tallinn. The first fortification was built back in the eleventh century, but the castle has undergone numerous rebuilds and expansions throughout history.

Tallinn is located on the shores of the Baltic Sea, which makes it a great place for outdoor recreation. The city has parks, beaches, and other green areas where you can enjoy the beauty of nature.

Worth a visit as well:

  • Town Hall Square is the central square of the Old Town, where various events and fairs are held;
  • St. Olaf's Church – one of the tallest churches in Europe, with a great view of the city from its observation deck.
  • Kadriorg Palace and a large park are nearby;
  • KUMU Museum with works of Estonian and foreign artists;
  • Lennusadam Maritime Museum, which presents various ships and other exhibits related to the sea.
