Drivers who travel around the city a lot know what advantages a compact car offers. You can buy one at the most favorable price if you choose a used car.

But how do you find a truly reliable small car that will serve more than one owner well? Autoexpress has compiled a list of the most successful models. They combine reliability with low operating costs, remain consistently practical and comfortable, and offer enough entertainment for their owners.

Vauxhall Corsa

Don't think that this little car is only suitable for city driving. The Corsa can handle longer journeys too, thanks to its modern engines that deliver power with good levels of efficiency. Although the standard equipment, value, and quality of the model are impressive, when it comes to practicality, the Corsa can be somewhat disappointing. Rear seat space is relatively small, and the trunk volume is only 309 liters. But access to these rear seats is quite good, thanks to the standard five-door layout. So, it's a really good option for getting around town.

MINI hatchback

Small in size but big in character, the MINI hatchback is the perfect choice for city driving. The interior design is pleasing with a neat dashboard, and the infotainment system is embodied in a large round screen that maintains the retro style of the brand. At the same time, it uses the industry-leading BMW interface with smart, crisp and clear graphics. The build quality and finishes also meet the high standard of the German brand, which is now owned by MINI. And the feeling of driving a larger car makes for a pleasant experience. In 2020, the MINI hatchback family was expanded with a fully electric model.

Hyundai i10

The prices of the used Hyundai i10 suggest that it will definitely be on the list of those looking to buy an urban small car on the secondary market. It may not offer the same fun or personality as a MINI, but it does offer impressive ride comfort and interior space, given its 3.67-meter length.

Peugeot 208

The second generation Peugeot 208 appeared in showrooms in 2020 in gasoline, diesel and electric variants. A wide range of engines and equipment options means that there are many variants of this five-door hatchback available on the used car market. The model offers the smart design, exciting dynamics and generous equipment that deservedly made the 208 the 2020 European Car of the Year.

Volkswagen up!

The smallest VW car is also one of the best from the manufacturer. The Volkswagen up! combines the grown-up nature of its larger siblings with the sense of fun that comes from the base 1.0-liter petrol model and the happy smile that comes from the GTI version. Also look out for the electric e-up!, it's smoother and quieter than the gasoline models, and it can cost a pretty penny to run.

Toyota Yaris

If you need a car that will be cheap to run and won't cause any hassle, then you should definitely consider the Toyota Yaris. It was released in 2011 with three or five doors, as well as 1.0 and 1.3 liter gasoline engines or a 1.4 liter diesel engine. A 1.5-liter hybrid with a CVT automatic transmission is also available, which was introduced in 2013. Thanks to its user-friendly infotainment system, spacious interior and large trunk, the Yaris is a brilliant city small car.

Ford Fiesta

Ford discontinued the Fiesta in 2023, ending more than four decades of success for this model. However, it is still popular with aftermarket buyers. Combining brilliant driving dynamics with family-friendly versatility and low running costs, the Ford can be called one of the best deals.

Renault Zoe

The model is now 10 years old and still has a cutting-edge feel to it, thanks to its sophisticated electric powertrain and modern styling. Later versions are faster, go further on a single charge, and have a nicer infotainment system. But the early versions can be purchased for a lower price.
