In winter, you want to be especially cozy and warm. One European city has been recognized as the friendliest on the continent, making it the perfect place for a weekend getaway or a romantic city vacation.

The Swedish capital topped the Condé Nast Traveler rating. In the Readers Choice Awards 2024 category, Stockholm received the award as a city where polite and cheerful people live. The details were reported by the Express.

"Swedes are open, polite, and cheerful, so Stockholm's title as Europe's friendliest city is well deserved," the Condé Nast Traveler article says.

And recalling how seriously the city's residents take comfort and coziness, the experts spoke about the tradition of "fika", which literally means "coffee break", but represents a tradition of communication that is more important than the hot drinks themselves.

This stunning city is located on 14 islands, making it a rather unique vacation destination. Travelers can explore each of the islands and enjoy sightseeing tours by boat.

Tourist attractions include the city's Royal Palace, the official royal residence of the Swedish monarch, now King Carl XVI Gustaf, although he and his wife, Queen Silvia, usually live in their private residence, Drottningholm Palace.

The palace is located in Gamla Stan, Stockholm's historic Old Town and central island. Just across the bridge is the small island of Riddarholmen, where visitors can see the famous Riddarholm Church, the only one in the city that has survived from the Middle Ages.

There are many options for history buffs. For example, the Vasa Museum displays a warship that capsized and sank in 1628, and the Historical Museum houses Viking artifacts and medieval exhibits.

Tourists should also visit Gamla Filmstaden, Sweden's answer to Hollywood, where they can get a glimpse of the time when Sweden was at the forefront of the film industry.
