"Shocking comeback": British experts react to Russian Sergey Kovalev's return to the ring. What it has to do with the Usyk-Fury fight
The return of Russian Sergey Kovalev (35-4-1, 29 KOs) to the ring on the undercard of the fight between Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) and Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) caused a serious stir. Fans and experts were surprised by this choice of the organizers of the show on February 17 in Riyadh.
The popular British portal Boxing Social called Kovalev's return a "shocking comeback" and doubted that he would take the fight against Swede Robin Sirwan Safar (16-0, 12 KOs) seriously. The 40-year-old native of Kopeysk, who has been living in the United States for a long time, will be making his second heavyweight fight.
"Fans have already begun speculating about how serious he is about his comeback and whether he can challenge to become a two-division world champion in 2024. The 31-year-old Safar is not ranked in the top 15 by any of the four sanctioning organizations, so Kovalev will likely be hoping that this fight will be the impetus for bigger fights and opportunities at heavyweight," the UK-based journalists noted.
