Berinchyk defeated Mexican Navarrete

Famous Ukrainian boxer Denis Berinchyk (19-0, 9 KOs) became the new WBO lightweight champion. On the night of May 19, the London 2012 Olympic medalist defeated the titled Mexican Emanuel Navarrete (39-1-2, 31 KOs), who holds the WBO featherweight belt, in the US.

Berinchyk's championship fight took place in San Diego and lasted all 12 rounds. The fight took place at a fairly high speed, with Denys seizing the initiative from the first round and trying to work as the number one.

In the sixth round, Navarrete landed a powerful uppercut, but Denys withstood the blow and responded with his own combination.

In the eighth three minutes, Berinchyk's pressure and his hits forced Emanuel to lean on the ropes. But the Mexican also showed the ability to take a punch, and in the final rounds he was dangerously going head first in close combat. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

The fight in the United States lasted all 12 rounds and ended with the Ukrainian winning by split decision: 115:113, 112:116 and 116:112.

For the 36-year-old Berinchyk, the victory over Navarrete was the 19th in a row in his professional career, but it was the first time the boxer ended the fight with a split decision.

After the fight in San Diego, Ukrainian boxers hold two of the four major lightweight belts, as earlier in May Vasyl Lomachenko won the IBF title by technical knockout over former absolute champion George Kambosos.
