There are no plans to cut off electricity in Ukraine on September 18. However, power companies have asked Ukrainians to reduce consumption during certain hours. At the same time, power facilities in 8 regions of Ukraine came under Russian shelling over the past day, leading to emergency shutdowns.

According to Ukrenergo's statement, Ukrainians should save electricity. The fact is that electricity consumption in the country is growing. Thus, on September 18, as of 9:30 a.m., it was 2.6% higher than at the same time on Tuesday, September 17.

"Please use electricity sparingly during the evening hours of maximum consumption. Do not turn on several powerful electrical appliances at the same time from 16:00 to 22:00," the statement said.

The Ministry of Energy also asks to save electricity during the morning peak: from 7 to 10 am. "We call on Ukrainians to continue to consume electricity economically and responsibly, especially during peak hours - from 7:00 to 10:00 and from 18:00 to 22:00, reducing consumption fluctuations that affect the operation of the power system," the ministry said.

According to the ministry, over the past day, energy infrastructure in Dnipro, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions came under enemy fire. In particular:

  • In Sumy region, equipment, household and industrial consumers lost power as a result of shelling of a substation. The power supply was partially restored. During the repeated shelling of the substation, a fire broke out. It was extinguished.
  • In Poltava region, an overhead line was disconnected during an air raid. An inspection revealed traces of a grassroots fire caused by shelling.
  • In Donetsk Oblast, the hostilities caused a power outage at a substation, household consumers and a mine. At the time of the incident, there were 89 workers in the mine and they were brought to the surface. The power supply has been partially restored.
  • In Kyiv region, substations were de-energized during an alarm, which resulted in power outages for household consumers in two regions. The power supply has been restored.

"At night, the enemy attacked the power facility in Sumy region again. A fire broke out as a result of the UAV attack, and the State Emergency Service units were involved in the firefighting. There were no blackouts. Consumers in Sumy and Sumy district, who were left without electricity supply after the previous day's shelling, have now been supplied with power," Ukrenergo added.

In addition, 6 settlements in Dnipropetrovska oblast were cut off from power supply due to adverse weather conditions. Problems with power supply also occurred due to technological disruptions:

  • Several substations, household consumers and local industry lost power in the northern region. The power supply has been restored.
  • In the southern regions, a high-voltage overhead line connecting the power systems of Ukraine and Moldova was disconnected for technical reasons.
  • In western Ukraine, a substation, household consumers, and the railroad lost power (there were disruptions in train traffic). Power has been restored.
  • In the northeast, several substations, household consumers and local industry lost power, while power facilities were reducing the voltage level. The power supply has been partially restored.

"Over the past day, power engineers have restored power to 127,477 consumers who were cut off as a result of hostilities, weather conditions and technological disruptions. In total, 522 settlements remain partially or completely de-energized as of this morning due to hostilities and technical violations ," the Ministry of Energy calculated.

Will there be a schedule of power outages on September 18 or not?

Thanks to the efforts of power engineers, the situation in the power system remains stable, but significant damage caused by massive enemy attacks, including one of the largest attacks on the energy sector on August 26, continues to complicate the operation of the power system. In addition, Russian troops continue to shell energy infrastructure facilities on a daily basis.

In total, since October 2022, Russia has carried out more than 1,000 strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure facilities. This year alone, 9 GW of generating capacity was lost as a result of hostile attacks.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, a number of media outlets have spread information that Romania has allegedly refused to help Ukraine and will no longer export electricity. In fact, Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja said that energy prices are higher in Eastern Europe, so it is necessary to create equal conditions and reduce the cost of electricity for his country.
