One step away from Oscar nomination: 8 Ukrainian films everyone should see

Although the documentary 20 Days in Mariupol has forever gone down in Ukrainian history as the first Oscar winner in this category, we should not forget other important Ukrainian film projects. At least 8 films are definitely worth watching.

There are not only war films but also dramatic and biographical ones. OBOZ.UA decided to tell you about them.

Homeward, 2019

Although Nariman Aliev's film Homeward was selected for the extended list of nominees, it was not included in the shortlist. The story of Mustafa, a warrior from Crimea who moved to Kyiv after the occupation of the peninsula, could have competed in the Best International Film nomination.

Winter on Fire, 2015

A very important film about the Revolution of Dignity almost made it to the Oscars but was rejected by the judges at the shortlist stage. Nevertheless, the documentary project was recognized all over the world and was streamed on Netflix.

Bad Roads, 2021

Natalka Vorozhbyt's film was not shortlisted for the 94th Academy Awards and lost her chance to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. According to the director, her work is dedicated to human weakness and is a woman's view of the war with Russia.

Klondike, 2023

Last year, the feature film by Ukrainian director Marina Er Gorbach was also shortlisted for the award but did not go further. The main event in the film was the downing of the Malaysian passenger plane flight MH17 in July 2014.

Ukrainian Sheriffs, 2016

Roman Bondarchuk's film was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. Although the film did not win the golden statuette, it can boast of the Jury Prize for Best Feature Documentary at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival.

Parajanov, 2013

Ten years ago, a film about the famous Armenian-Ukrainian director Sergei Parajanov, co-produced by Ukraine, France, Georgia and Armenia, competed in the same category.

Black Level, 2017

The Ukrainian documentary-fiction drama film directed by Valentyn Vasyanovych could have represented the country at a prestigious ceremony. Although this did not happen, it was included in the top 100 films in the history of Ukrainian cinema.

Firecrosser, 2012

The feature film directed by Mykhailo Ilyenko was shortlisted for the Oscars and received many enthusiastic reviews around the world. The film tells the story of Ivan Dodoka, a young man from Poltava region who becomes a Soviet military pilot.
