Olympics 2024. The Ukrainian champion gymnast burst into tears on air and ended her career. Video
The captain of the Ukrainian rhythmic gymnastics team, Maria Vysochenska, could not contain her emotions when commenting on the team's performance in the group all-around at the 2024 Olympics. Maria, along with Diana Bayeva, Alina Melnyk, Valeria Peremeta, and Kira Shyrykina, scored 65.700 points and finished seventh out of eight teams.
In the five-ring exercise, the Ukrainians demonstrated the highest skill and took intermediate second place. After the rotation (3 ribbons and 2 balls), our girls performed poorly, which ultimately cost them medals.
"It was our medal, but we lost it. If not for our mistakes, we would have been at the awards ceremony now. It was our dream... I don't know why this happened to us. We worked very hard and put a lot of effort into it, and I'm really sorry that my sports career ended like this. Because we could have stood on the podium now," Maria said with tears in her eyes on Suspilne.Sport.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Vysoczanska's profile on the official website of Eurosport stated that the city belongs to Russia.
In May 2024, Maria took part in the Olympic Torch Relay ceremony in France, where she led a team of athletes from 27 European Union countries.
Maria is a two-time European champion (2020), as well as a bronze medalist at the World Championships in Spain (2023).
Maria's father, Oleh Vysoczansky, took part in the 242-day battle for Donetsk airport in 2015, where he was wounded. After the full-scale invasion began, he returned to the army and is now defending Ukraine in the Armed Forces.
Oleh was able to escape the war with Russia to support his daughter at a rhythmic gymnastics competition in group exercises.
