It's been 20 years since the premiere of Brokeback Mountain, which is among the greatest LGBTQ+ films of all time. Directed by Ang Lee, the romantic drama won three Oscars and four Golden Globe Awards, as well as the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

Many of the actors who starred in this movie have built stunning careers. OBOZ.UA decided to show how the stars of Brokeback Mountain have changed since the movie's release.

Heath Ledger

The Australian actor played one of the main characters in the movie, Enis Del Mar. In 2006, Ledger was awarded the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor in Brokeback Mountain, and was nominated for an Oscar, BAFTA, SAG and Golden Globe in the same category.

For his role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, the actor was posthumously awarded the Golden Globe, Oscar and Screen Actors Guild Award. On January 22, 2008, he was found dead at the age of 29 in his apartment in Manhattan. The cause of death was an overdose of painkillers, sleeping pills and tranquilizers.

Jake Gyllenhaal

The American actor played the second main character in Brokeback Mountain, Jack Twist. For this role, Gyllenhaal was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and he also won a BAFTA award and received professional recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Moreover, together with his co-star Heath Ledger, he won the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss.

After filming Ang Lee's movie, Jake's career took off. He starred in David Fincher's Zodiac, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Spider-Man: Far From Home from Marvel and many others. And in the psychological thriller The Enemy, the actor played two roles at once - a history teacher and his double. Gyllenhaal is also a producer and continues to lead an active acting life. In 2021, he received three nominations at the 74th Tony Awards.

Michelle Williams

The American actress played Alma, Enis's wife, in Brokeback Mountain. Before that, she acted mostly in youth comedies. For her role in this film, Williams was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for the first time. The actress's career developed quite successfully. For her performance as Marilyn Monroe in the tragicomedy My Week with Marilyn, she was awarded a Golden Globe statuette and nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA.

The star also starred in Shutter Island with Leonardo DiCaprio, Blue Valentine and superhero movie Venom based on Marvel Comics. By the way, she has a daughter from Heath Ledger - Matilda Rose Ledger.

Anne Hathaway

In Brokeback Mountain, the American actress played the wife of bisexual cowboy Lureen Newsome Twist. Hathaway was already famous before, and after filming Ang Lee's project, she continued to develop her career. In The Devil Wears Prada, she played the assistant editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine. She also appeared as the famous English writer Austen in Becoming Jane. And for her performance in Rachel Getting Married, Anne was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

Moreover, Hathaway has appeared in such films as Alice in Wonderland, One Day, The Dark Knight Rises, Les Misérables, and Interstellar.

Randy Quaid

In Brokeback Mountain, the American actor played Joe Aguirre, a rancher who hired the main characters, Enis and Jack. Quaid is known as a versatile theater and film actor. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the 1973 film The Last Detail, while for his portrayal of Lyndon Johnson in LBJ: The Early Years, he won a Golden Globe Award.

In his more than 30-year career, he has starred in over 90 films. Although he hasn't been seen on screen very often after Brokeback Mountain.
