Netflix wants to make an English-language adaptation of Squid Game: director's name revealed
At the end of December, Netflix will release the second season of the unexpected hit Korean series Squid Game. However, this is not the only surprise that may await fans of the survivor.
As Deadline has learned, the streaming service is developing an English-language adaptation of the show. And the director of Fight Club, David Fincher, was invited to direct the project. According to rumors circulating in Hollywood, Fincher is expected to start working on it in 2025.
The project will be the first staged offshoot of Squid Game. Although it is not the first expansion of this universe - in 2023, the first season of the reality show Squid Game: The Challenge, a series of video games was also launched.
Fincher's series, if it comes to fruition, will be the first English-language project based on a thriller by Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk. However, Netflix has not yet commented on these rumors.
Nevertheless, experts say that Fincher is the perfect candidate to direct a remake or spinoff of Squid Game. All his work is in line with a similar dark atmosphere and touches on the theme of violence. Moreover, the 1997 thriller The Game, starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn, has many similarities with the original series. The movie also revolves around real people who become unwitting participants in a hellish game.
Moreover, Fincher had previously signed a cooperation agreement with Netflix. Therefore, it would be a very logical step for the streaming service to involve him in a project in the Squid Game universe. Previously, there were rumors that it might be a feature film, but now it has become known that it is still a series. In addition, information surfaced that the script for it is already being written by the author of the Utopia series Dennis Kelly, and the show will take place in the United States.
It's also worth mentioning that Fincher helped Netflix become a TV production giant by creating the House of Cards series and the animated hit Love, Death and Robots as a producer. In addition, Fincher produced the show "Mindhunter" and directed 7 episodes. And last fall, the feature-length movie The Killer with Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton was released on streaming.
As for the expansion of the Squid Game universe, Netflix has had big plans for it since the show became an unexpected breakthrough in the fall of 2021. Back then, the series, which had virtually no promotional campaign, gained incredible popularity and even won six Emmy Awards among its 14 nominations.
