Money directly to Ukraine: Zelensky proposed to the EU to radically change payments to refugees

Zelensky proposed to pay social benefits to refugees through the budget of Ukraine

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has called on European countries to direct social support for Ukrainian refugees to the Ukrainian budget. According to the president, Ukraine could redistribute these funds itself according to the location of the person.

Zelensky said this in an interview with the German TV channel ARD. Zelensky's statement was made in response to a question about whether Germany should cut social assistance to refugees in order to support Ukraine directly with the savings.

"I am not talking about our Ukrainians in Germany. I am generalizing this to you. That's why I have always said that it would be much better for us if Germany supported Ukrainians by giving money to the budget of Ukraine, and then Ukraine would redistribute this money depending on where this person is," the head of state said.

He noted that sometimes refugees receive assistance not only from the country where they are currently staying, but also from Ukraine. In addition, Zelenskyy explained that some of the Ukrainian funds remained in Europe when refugees fled the war. However, after the support for Ukrainians who are now abroad began, European funds remained in the economy of a particular country.

Zelensky also noted that the decision to support Ukrainians is a personal choice of Germans and Germany, as well as any other European country. He also urged not to generalize the issue of refugees, especially men, as there are those who have legally left the country. Zelensky expressed his desire to have attention drawn to where most of these funds remain when the whole world is talking about financial support for Ukrainians.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, many EU countries have already decided to reduce direct support for Ukrainians. For example, in Poland, the current rules for refugees will be in effect only until September 2024. The announced changes after this date include a reduction in child benefits and the cancellation of refugee status after leaving Poland even for a short period of time, for example, for holidays or vacation.
