Have you ever had that strange feeling that you're cleaning more and more thoroughly, but the house just keeps getting dirtier? Surfaces become covered with sticky residue, stains turn into stubborn dirt, and dust becomes more and more.

This can be caused by poor cleaning habits. Southern Living interviewed cleaning experts, and they pointed out what people often do wrong and why it causes problems with cleanliness.

Use dishwashing detergent everywhere

Dishwashing detergent is great at dissolving grease and it's really handy for cleaning, especially in the kitchen. However, this type of detergent needs to be rinsed off, and not all surfaces can be cleaned thoroughly enough. The result is a sticky coating that attracts dirt and dust. That's why in many cases, a vinegar or citric acid solution will be much more effective in cleaning.

Rubbing the carpet to remove stains

If you start rubbing your carpet vigorously if you spill or spill something on it, you are actually rubbing the dirt deeper into the fibers. After such care, only professional cleaning can save the surface. To clean your carpet properly, blot the stain with a paper towel or a clean microfiber cloth, gently pressing on it until the dirt no longer remains on the towel. After that, treat the stain with an all-purpose stain remover. Don't rub it in, either, but blot the fibers with it.

Buy expensive cleaning products

The most expensive cleaning products are not always the best. Usually, products such as baking soda, white vinegar, or citric acid will do the trick for household stains. Apply the appropriate product to the stained area, allow it to work, and then rinse off the residue with water and wipe dry.

Not cleaning the dishwasher

Most people think that dishwashers clean themselves, but in reality, they need to be cleaned and maintained frequently too. Start by removing all shelves and baskets. Next, spray the inside of the dishwasher with a 1:1 solution of water and vinegar, and then wipe the door, sides, and bottom with a clean cloth. Then replace all the parts. For additional cleaning, run an empty machine on the highest temperature without detergent.

Use stainless steel polish in the kitchen

On the one hand, using stainless steel polish to clean your refrigerator and other kitchen appliances leaves the surface clean and shiny. But there is a downside. Such products strongly attract dust, pet hair, and other small contaminants. Fingerprints are also more easily left on the treated surface.

Do not clean the refrigerator condenser from dust

Usually, we simply do not see this part, because it stands almost close to the wall. But the dust that collects on the condenser coils can fly into the air and circulate in your home. And if it accumulates too much, it can also impair the functionality of the refrigerator. To solve the problem, simply vacuum the condenser with a crevice attachment. And clean the area under the refrigerator itself - it will be useful.

Wipe the walls with melamine sponges

Melamine sponges are great for cleaning many surfaces, especially in bathrooms and kitchens. The only thing you should avoid is using them to clean scuff marks from walls. Due to its physical properties, melamine simply peels off the top layer of paint or plaster, leaving a stain on the wall. It is better to wash such surfaces with damp sponges or microfiber cloths.

Over-enthusiastic about floor cleaners

Whatever you choose - a floor cleaner or polish for your floor type - they tend to build up on the surface over time. The film that forms in this way attracts dirt and makes the floor sticky over time. It is better to start cleaning by vacuuming the floor and wash the floor more often with clean, warm water.
