China has unveiled a spacesuit for lunar astronauts. The overall design of the lunar landing suit is inspired by traditional Chinese armor, which emphasizes the suit's strong and determined look.

At the presentation, the expert tested the suit, demonstrating various movements, squats, and even climbing a ladder. China plans to send a crew of astronauts to the moon by 2030, Space.com reports.

A suit with elements of symbolism

According to Chinese developers, the new lunar spacesuit is an evolution of Feitian, China's first space suit. Feitian is the name of a legendary Buddhist goddess, meaning "flying in the sky."

The design of the suit conveys its strength and also has elements of symbolism. "The suit is designed for lunar exploration, such as walking and working on the surface of the satellite. Therefore, we wanted to convey a sense of strong will and steadfastness, which we organically integrated into the design of the suit. We also added a ribbon element to convey a sense of free flow," said Zhang Wanxin, director of the Suit Engineering Office and deputy chief designer of the astronaut system at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center.

As for the technical characteristics, the suit is made of protective fabric that protects against the harsh thermal environment and lunar dust, experts say. There is also a panoramic visor with glare protection for better visibility.

The developers emphasize that there are two cameras on the sides of the helmet for video recording. However, the main feature of the suit is a multifunctional control console located on the chest, which simplifies the astronaut's work and makes it more efficient.

Innovative changes in the suit

Unlike the previous Chinese Feitan space suit, "the new one is mainly designed to be lightweight, meeting the requirements of low-gravity activities, with configurations that allow for easy crouching and bending," the suit's designers emphasize.

"The suit allows you to perform more actions. In different poses, the physical form should not suffer. Therefore, it requires a better fit on the human body. The new suit is more like ordinary clothes compared to other off-ship spacesuits," said Wang Chunhui, deputy chief developer of astronaut training systems at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center.

Wu Zhiqiang, another astronaut training systems developer at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center, added that complex environmental factors such as high vacuum and low gravity, complex surface topography, high and low temperatures, and strong radiation will have a great impact on astronauts' work and protection, so they must be taken into account in the spacesuit.

"As astronauts will be walking on the lunar surface and conducting scientific research, the spacesuits need to have better ergonomic support, be smaller and more integrated. In addition, it is necessary to significantly improve the full protective ability of the lunar landing boots," Wu Zhiqiang emphasized.
