Japan, like many other developed countries, is facing the problem of an aging nation in remote regions. Therefore, the government has introduced several programs that encourage young people to move to less populated areas. Newcomers are offered financial assistance for renting housing, starting a business, etc. They also offer free or very cheap housing for new residents.

Financial support programs for relocation are available in different regions. The conditions and amount of assistance may vary depending on which one you choose. The Express has described interesting options for those who are willing to take the risk of starting a new life in a distant country.

The government is offering 4,800,000 yen (almost 30 thousand euros) to those willing to move to rural areas as part of the country's Regional Revitalization Program.

"A lot of young Japanese people don’t want to go through the hassle of trying to find a buyer when they inherit old family homes. There are hundreds of traditional Japanese countryside houses offering amazing locations, space, and architecture that are just going to waste right now. This is the perfect opportunity to snap up one of these amazing properties and start an amazing new adventure," said Wayne Mills, Head of Operations at Seven Seas Worldwide.

The program aims to revitalize the Japanese countryside and spur economic growth.

"It’s a win-win: you get a fresh start and a helping hand, while local economies enjoy a much-needed boost, " Mills explained.

Takahama is a picturesque fishing town in Japan that, like many other similar communities, has faced the problem of depopulation and an aging population. However, local authorities and active residents did not give up and developed an ambitious revitalization program aimed at preserving traditions.

Takahama is gradually changing. The number of tourists is increasing, local crafts are being revived, and the population is growing. Takahama is becoming an example of successful implementation of rural revitalization projects.

Another possibility is the mountain village of Shimokawa-chō in Hokkaido. The comprehensive program includes several areas:

  • Support for young farmers. There are grants and training in modern farming methods.
  • Brand creation and market promotion of local products.
  • Agritourism development.
  • Creation of comfortable conditions for tourists.
