A British tactical medic, 25-year-old Katherine Mielniczuk, who served in Ukraine, died in Kyiv. The woman's body was found by her colleagues in bed in her own home.
This was reported by her colleagues from the Project Konstantin community on Facebook. A fundraiser for repatriation of volunteer's body to her homeland is already created.
"It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Katherine Mielniczuk. All we know is that she was found in her bed (on December 24, 2023 - Ed.)," the statement said.
It is noted that the circumstances of the doctor's death are not considered suspicious, but the Ukrainian authorities will release additional information later. The community has announced a fundraiser to repatriate Mielniczuk to the UK.
The former chemistry student at the University of Bristol has spent the last 18 months in Ukraine, where she served.
According to The Sun, Katherine said on social media that she grew up in southeast London and went to school near Orpington. In a video published in July, Mielniczuk told the journalist that she worked in emergency medicine for six years before volunteering in Ukraine. She said she made the decision after "seeing vulnerable children being killed in Kharkiv, Izium and some parts of Kyiv."
"Even if I have two arms, two legs and half a brain, it is my duty to go and help. I will stay until maybe it is not safe here or until I have to go back to my brother or mother. I feel safe and competent in this country," Mielniczuk emphasized.
