"It's a victory of the truth": Mariupol mayor's advisor reacts to the Oscar for the film 20 Days in Mariupol

The Oscar award for the Ukrainian documentary 20 Days in Mariupol is one of Ukraine's major victories during the war against the Russian occupiers. Honoring the Ukrainian film about the events in the blockaded city with the most prestigious award in cinema is a victory of truth over the Kremlin's lies.

Petro Andriushchenko, an advisor to the mayor of Mariupol, said this in an interview with OBOZ.UA. He shared his impressions of watching the first Ukrainian Oscar-winning film.

According to Andriushchenko, 20 Days in Mariupol is the most powerful movie he has ever seen in his life. This "brilliant movie" will help Ukraine and Mariupol itself in the future, as it preserves the memory of Russia's crimes and the heroism of Ukrainians.

"It's very powerful, it's probably the most powerful thing I've seen in my life, whether it's a documentary, a fiction or any kind of movie. It is absolutely real and all the time you feel like you are directly involved in all those events, without exaggeration, just the reality as it is. It's just a brilliant movie," commented Andriushchenko enthusiastically.

The advisor to the mayor of Mariupol also emphasized that making such a film in the midst of war is a real feat that should be recognized with state awards.

"This is a brilliant act and it's actually more than just a movie, because to make such a movie in those conditions is a real feat that I hope will not only find a response at the Oscars, but it also deserves a state award at least, given that some people have been given them for lesser achievements. So there really are not enough words to describe everything that this film really means," said the advisor to the mayor of Mariupol.

According to Andriushchenko, this Oscar is of great importance for Ukraine. Thanks to this award, the whole world will know the truth about the terrible war that Russia, led by the bloody dictator Vladimir Putin, is waging against Ukraine.

"This is a victory for the truth, a hope that in the end the whole world will not only see but understand us, and this is a response to all Russian propagandists, our enemies. This victory is more than just an artistic victory. This is one of the great victories of Ukraine, including during this war," emphasized Petro Andriushchenko, an advisor to the mayor of Mariupol.

The documentary "20 Days in Mariupol" won the first Oscar for Ukraine. The film was shot by Ukrainian videographer and war journalist Mstislav Chernov, who spent 20 days in the besieged city and documented the events that took place there. The film was also produced by photographer Yevhen Malolietka and producer Vasylisa Stepanenko.

In his Oscar speech,Mstyslav Chernov admitted that he wished he had never made this film, and that he would not hesitate to exchange the statuette for peace in Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to the Oscar awarding for the Ukrainian documentary 20 Days in Mariupol. The Head of State said that the film shows the truth about Russian terrorism and Ukraine will never forget a single day of Mariupol, its defenders and defenders.

The victory of 20 Days in Mariupol at the 2024 Oscars caused tantrums in Russia. The Russians called the film a "fake" and accused the team of editing, lying and photoshopping. Russian channels simply ignored this year's awards show.
