"It still haunts me". How Ryan Gosling "ruined" the iconic scene from La La Land

Why Ryan Gosling thinks he "ruined" the iconic scene from La La Land

Damien Chazelle's biggest hit, La La Land, may seem like a flawless but bittersweet musical that broke audiences' hearts with its realistic ending back in 2016. But the movie turned out to be imperfect for Ryan Gosling.

The film's lead actor starred alongside Oscar-winning Emma Stone, demonstrating on screen the exciting love story of an aspiring actress and an ambitious jazz musician. One of the most iconic moments of La La Land was the scene where the characters dance against the backdrop of Los Angeles at night. It turns out that Gosling can't watch this fragment without self-criticism. He spoke about this in an interview with WSJ Style magazine.

In the conversation, the celebrity noted that "it still haunts him." According to Gosling, he had no idea that the scene would become the official poster for the movie. The star's problem was hidden in details that even the most devoted La La Land fans might not have noticed.

According to the actor, both he and Stone were supposed to keep their arms up while dancing, but he came up with another, "original idea" – to place his arm at a flat angle to make it "cooler." Ryan said that everyone on the set tried to talk him out of it, but he was confident in his decision.

Now that Gosling sees his unnatural hand position on the movie's posters, he admits that "it just kills the right energy of the scene."

"La La Land is still considered one of the best dramatic musicals: its rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 91%, while on IMDb it is 8/10. In 2017, the film received 14 Oscar nominations, which is a record in the history of the award, surpassing Titanic (1997) and All About Eve (1950). Actress Emma Stone won the statuette for Best Actress, and the film managed to win in six categories in total.
