Cloud storage is a great and very convenient solution for those who need to access a large number of files from their smartphone. However, some iPhone owners will no longer be able to take advantage of some of the benefits of iCloud's remote storage service.

As Apple has announced, iOS 9 or later is now required to back up your device via iCloud. According to Mac Rumors, owners of smartphones on iOS 8 and earlier versions will no longer be able to store the relevant data on this cloud.

The changes were announced in November and came into effect this week. Moreover, Apple has deleted all existing iCloud backups for outdated devices.

The updates do not apply to apps and files stored on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 8 or earlier. You can still manually back up these devices to a Mac or Windows PC.

For users of older iOS versions, this means that all backups will need to be done manually. However, if they update their operating system, they will be able to access iCloud again.

Apple says it has discontinued iCloud backups for older devices to "more closely align" with its minimum software requirements. With the iOS 9 update, which was released several years ago, Apple introduced CloudKit for iCloud backup and stopped using the old system.
