Hungary proposes to halve funding for Ukraine: Orban comes up with a new reason

Hungary has proposed that EU countries reduce funding for Ukraine from 50 billion euros to 25 billion euros in the coming years. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that it should also be taken into account that the United States plans to provide money, so 50 billion "may be too much."

According to Bloomberg, this is the money that Ukraine will receive in 2024-2027. Earlier, Hungary blocked such assistance using various arguments, including delays in its financing of 13 billion euros, and the inclusion of the Hungarian bank OTP Bank in Ukraine's list of "war sponsors."

However, all of Orban's conditions have either been fulfilled or are being fulfilled. In particular, Ukraine has removed the Hungarian bank from the blacklist. Discussions about funding for Ukraine intensified after the United States did not include support for Ukraine in the document that was approved before approving its budget.

The EU is based on the principle of unanimous decision-making. Even if one EU country is against providing aid to Ukraine, the decision will not be adopted. This is what Hungary is using to force Ukraine to fulfill the conditions for a "correct" vote.

By the way, Ukraine's budget for 2024 is foreseen with a record deficit. Without the support of the EU and the US, Ukraine will not be able to finance its expenses: public sector salaries, pensions, etc.
